Anxiety & Stress

If you suffer from stress and anxiety then you are most certainly not alone. It is now believed that 9 million people in the UK will suffer a serious form of anxiety during their lifetime.

A certain amount of stress can be dealt with naturally, as long as it is within our ‘safe levels’ but when it becomes too much for us to cope with naturally it can affect the quality of our life. Excessive or prolonged stress can lead to illness, physical and emotional exhaustion, increased anxiety or even panic attacks. Stress has been linked to all leading causes of death, including heart disease, cancer, accidents and suicide and it is now believed that over 90% of disease is caused or complicated by stress. It also interferes with sleep, relationships and intellectual efficiency and can cause issues such as muscle tension, sweating, nausea, gastrointestinal discomfort or diarrhoea. It can even weaken the immune system and impair our mental faculty.

Stress is a response pattern that results from part of our genetic make-up. Commonly called the fight/flight/freeze response, it is activated when we perceive we are in danger, or if we expect that something dangerous may be about to happen. This was useful to primitive man to prepare him for attacks from predators and rival tribes. Today, the response misinterprets the constant bombardment of stressful situations and the cumulative result of this is anxiety.
